The HP Officejet 4500 is a simple all-in-one (AIO) inkjet printer, with a decent price tag, specifically designed for those who have simple expectations and needs. Rightfully so since this printer doesn’t offer much in the way of features. There is no slot for memory cards, LCD color screen, duplexer, auto-detection for paper, or PictBridge port. This is not to say it doesn’t have anything at all. The printer has an easy setup and produces decent scans as well as good quality text.
When you first look at the Officejet, you will notice it has a very professional demeanour, with its body made of all black. Then, you will notice how lightweight and compact it is, making it extremely easy to place and position the printer almost anywhere in a home office or small office environment.
The printer is a color inkjet printer with Wi-Fi, USB 2.O, and RJ-11 interface, takes up to 8.5. X 14 paper, a maximum color resolution of 4,800×1,200dot per inch (dpi), maximum monochrome resolution of 600 x 600dpi, an included Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), scan resolution of up to 1,200×2,400ppi, 2-5 inch LCD, measures
8.5×17.1×15.8 inches and weighs 13 pounds.
The LCD is pretty small and offers monochrome texts with only a line for display, however, it is backlit, very easy to view as well as navigate. This is probably because the Officejet doesn’t offer much in the way of controls and options. There is also a numeric keypad for faxing and a power button that is illuminated and blinks when printing. In addition, there are icons that represent modes such as color fax, white fax, scan and color copy. These icons are not lit however.
The Officejet only uses two cartridges: black and combined. The combined cartridge has yellow, cyan, and magenta. This means when a color dries or runs out the entire color cartridge has to be replaced, which can be a waste of money as time progresses and cost for consumables add up. Another downside is the cartridge replacement. This is because of the placement of the cartridge close to the inside wall and you have to twist the cartridge. This can be very inconveniencing especially when there are so many other models that just snap into place. A plus though, is that you never have to worry about putting the wrong cartridge into the wrong slot since the black and combined cartridge are shaped differently.
Despite, the cartridge, installation and setup are easy. In terms of print times, it is what you would expect, which is average, and the quality depends heavily on what you are printing. If you are printing text, it is good. However, if you are printing photos, skip this $129.99 printer and buy one that has better photo printing.
